What is web hosting?

Web hosting is a service that allows organizations and individuals to post a website or web page onto the Internet. A web host, or web hosting service provider, is a business that provides the technologies and services needed for the website or web page to be viewed on the Internet. Websites are hosted or stored, on special computers called servers. When Internet users want to view your website, all they need to do is type your website address or domain into their browser. Their computer will then connect to your server and your web pages will be delivered to them through the browser.

Most hosting companies require that you own your domain in order to host with them. If you do not have a domain, the hosting companies will help you purchase one.

Is web hosting free?

Web hosts usually charge for the service they render. You as a user also have the ability to have your own full-fledged server right from your school, but the main difference between investing in your own server and picking a hosting company is that designing your own server is likely to cost you dearly. To set up a server, you will require a powerful computer with a good processor and lots of RAM and also an operating system like Linux or Windows. To add to that you will also be required to have technical skills to manage and run the server.

When you hire a web hosting company, it will manage all backend concerns, including the maintenance and repair of the servers. So basically, web hosts are designed to make your life easier by saving you the hassle.

How much is a web hosting fee?

The web hosting fee for a system like this is estimated to ₱700 to ₱1,000 per month.

What are the considerations in choosing the best web hosting service provider?

In choosing the best and appropriate web hosting service provider for this kind of system, you need to consider the bandwidth allocation and web space allowed.  Most of the web hosting service provider now offers unlimited features.

What is bandwidth?

Bandwidth in website hosting is the amount of data your website can transfer to your users in a given amount of time.  Typically, bandwidth is calculated and sold by Gigabytes (GB), but some web hosting companies may offer “unlimited bandwidth”.

The easiest way to understand how bandwidth works is to think of it as a diameter of the pipe.

A large pipe can deliver more water at one time than a small pipe. That’s because a larger pipe has more capacity to do so.  In the same way, having more bandwidth means that more website data can be moved at one time.

 What is web space?

Web space is, quite simply, storage space for data on the Internet. The information and files you place on your site and in your web storage space can include the basic structure of your pages, text, images, audio files, videos, and more.

Our school has no access to the internet.  Can we still avail of this?
